Warning: The colors shown here are applied on pine and intended to approximate the final color. The color and the gloss obtained will vary according to the type, texture, and the absorbency of the wood. Film thickness and the number of coats applied will also affect the result. To see the final color, it is recommended to apply the product on the wood to be used. Tips
During the application, the application method and amounts specified in the Technical Data Sheet of Hemel Deck Stain-Deck Varnish should be followed.
Since it is not suitable for regional maintenance in large and heavy traffic areas, it requires a complete scraper. In such areas, HEMEL Deck Oil or HEMEL Exotic Oil should be used according to the type of wood.
Since it is a product that makes a film on the surface, it may be necessary to make a complete scraper in maintenance operations. Therefore, it is recommended to be used in areas not exceeding 20-25 m2 and where human traffic is low.
Hemel Deck Stain-Deck Varnish must be applied to all surfaces, including the front and back surfaces of the wooden decks.
It gives better results with a medium-hard floor brush with a curved handle.
Frequently Asked Questions
The Hemel Deck Stain-Deck Varnish I applied peeled off in the form of a crust.
This problem indicates that your wooden deck gets intense water from the sides or bottom. Hemel Deck Stain-Deck Varnish must be applied to all surfaces of the wooden decks. If you cannot apply in this way, we recommend you to use natural oil-based HEMEL Deck Oil and HEMEl Exotic Oil instead of Hemel Deck Stain-Deck Varnish on the floor.
What is your longest lasting product that I can use for deck?
Hemel Deck Stain-Deck Varnish is our product that you will get the longest service for areas not exceeding 20-25 m2 and with low traffic.
Hemel Deck Stain-Deck Varnish is very worn in areas of heavy walking. Can I do local maintenance?
It is not possible to perform a regional maintenance on Hemel Deck Stain-Deck Varnish applied surface. The old paint should be completely removed from the surface and the product should be reapplied.
Problems and Solutions
Hemel Deck Stain-Deck Varnish is different in tone from the color you like on the color chart.
Causes of the Problem:
- Application of Hemel Deck Stain-Deck Varnish without mixing adequately
- Using more or less than the amount specified in the user manual
- The woods you have applied on are impregnated with Tanalith or Tanatone.
- Products appear in different shades in different wood types
Solution:
- Since the specific gravity of the pigment and the resin that gives color to Hemel Deck Stain-Deck Varnish is different, the pigment sinks to the bottom over time. For this reason, before using the product, it should be mixed very well with the help of a spatula and make sure that there is no undissolved pigment left in the bottom of the box.
- During the application, the amount of product applied to the surface should be checked with a wet film meter from time to time and it should be ensured that the product is applied in the amounts specified in the technical data sheet of the product.
- If you want to see how the product will look on the surface before the application, you can apply in a small area by requesting a product sample from our authorized dealers or us.
Resin flowing from wood after application
Causes of the Problem:
- This situation is a natural process arising from the structure of the wood. Some types of wood, such as cedar, contain dense resin.
Solution:
- To improve the visuality, the parts where the resin flows can be wiped with cellulosic thinner and retouched after the patting sandpaper.
- If resin flow is observed on the surface after paint/varnish application; It should be waited for a while for all the resin in the knots and resin pouches to flow and dry on the surface. Afterward, the dried resin should be removed with a spatula and the resin residue on the surface should be wiped off with cellulosic thinner. If necessary, this area can be retouched after the sanding.
- The best time to clean resin is when it is cold. When this application is made in hot weather, the resin can contaminate the surface.
Brush marks on the surface after application
Causes of the Problem
- The applied brush is not clean
- Not using proper brushes
- Failure to scan (returning to the painted surface and feeding or removing excess paint) during the application.
- Not applying enough product to spread the product on the surface.
Solution:
- To remove the brush marks, the application should be repeated after sanding.
Hemel Deck Stain-Deck Varnish does not dry
Causes of the Problem:
- Too much thinning of Hemel Deck Stain-Deck Varnish
- Applying too much product
- If the application is carried out under the conditions of the workshop, the ventilation (windows and doors are constantly closed, no airflow) is not sufficient.
After the 1st coat application, the 2nd coat is applied without waiting for complete drying.
- Failure to comply with the application temperature and relative humidity specified in the general instructions of Hemel Deck Stain-Deck Varnish.
- Humidity ratio of the wood is more than 20% during the application
- Not wiping the wood with tannin such as Iroko and chestnut with cellulosic thinner before application.
Solution:
- The operations under the title of the Causes of the Problem must be checked and the conditions causing it must be eliminated.
Peeling and spilling Hemel Deck Stain-Deck Varnish from the surface
Causes of the Problem:
- Water intake from the heads of the wood or from the surface of which no product is applied
- The moisture content of the treated wood during application is more than 20%.
- Failure to sand following the instructions for use.
- If the product is not applied to the surface in a small amount and does not form a sufficient film layer due to not complying with the consumption rates specified in the instructions for use.
- Since heat-treated wood (ThermoWood® etc.) has high absorption, the product should be applied at least 3 layers.
Solution:
- Operations under the title of the Causes of the Problem must be checked and the conditions that cause it must be eliminated.
- Peeling and spilled areas should be completely cleaned and a scraper should be made, if the wood needs maintenance, the necessary maintenance should be done and the maintenance process should be completed by applying the product to these surfaces again.
The product doesn't spread and collects in certain areas.
Causes Of The Problem:
* Lack of adequate polling sanding between layers
* Excessive thinning of Hemel deck Stain-Deck varnish
* Applying less product to the surface than the recommended amount
* Presence of silicon or solvent vapor in the environment. For example, silicone product was previously used in the environment and adequate ventilation was not done (PVC application, solvent-based paint use, etc.)
* Smearing other substances into the brush or roll used or not cleaned well before use.
Solution:
* Operations in the problem causes header should be checked and the conditions that cause it should be eliminated.
* Hemel deck Stain-Deck varnish has just been applied to the surface and if it is a small area, the paint on the surface should be removed with a clean cloth and the surface should be completely cleaned from the new paint.
- If cleaning the surface is not possible, further scanning of the surface should be done with the brush.
- If the product doesn't spread and collects in certain areas on the surface, the problem should be eliminated before the product is allowed to dry on the surface.

What is a deck varnish? What is it used for?
Wood deck varnish is a liquid solution used to protect wooden floors from water, prevent corrosion and increase their durability against external factors. The most important feature of wooden deck varnish is that it provides a non-slip surface and prevents slipping on wooden deck floors. It is also highly resistant to the harmful effects of sunlight (UV). It acts as a protective layer. It is applied on wood as a preservative. It also makes wooden decks that have been used for a long time look like new.
What are the features of water-based deck varnish (Wood floor varnish)?
Water-based wood floor varnish (deck stain) is a varnish that is good for both health and use.
- Water-based varnish is odorless and is also environmentally friendly. The thinner used in the production of solvent-based varnish has odor and substances harmful to human health.
- Water-based wood varnish gives a natural look as wood absorbs more water-based varnish.
- Water-based deck varnish dries faster.
- Water-based deck wood floor varnish is safer for health as it has less VOC value.
Which deck varnish (Wood floor varnish) should be preferred?
Preferred wooden floor varnish should be the one that is sensitive to human and environmental health, nature friendly, does not contain heavy metal and lead, and has a toy safety certificate.
It is also important to be breathable for the extension of the life of the deck.
Since decks are in areas exposed to sunlight, it is important to choose a varnish that provides strong UV protection.
It would be more correct to choose a semi-transparent water-based wood floor varnish to make a nice deck coloring while preserving the natural texture and appearance of the wooden floor.
The wood varnish to be used to apply on wooden floors must have a non-slip surface.
Wood floor varnish (Deck varnish, Deck stain) colors and prices
In the wood varnishing application, a semi-transparent colored varnish should be used if it is desired not to lose the natural texture of the wood.
There are many different color options for wood floor varnishes and translucent colored varnishes. Hemel's water-based semi-transparent, non-slip HEMEL® Deck Stain wood floor varnish, has microparticles and available in 4 different colors. You can color many wooden floors with it such as the pier, poolsides, marina, yacht or ship decks, winter gardens, walkways.
