    Tips

During the application, the application method and quantities specified in the Technical Data Sheet of the product must be followed.

Before applying, make sure that the Hickson Decor Aqua Decorative Colorant applied to the wooden surface, is dried.

Apply 2 coats with a brush without sanding, waiting for 1.5-2 hours between coats.

If the waiting time exceeds 3 hours between coats, wait 24 hours and make sanding with 220 or 240 grit sandpaper.

It is more resistant to sunlight when Hickson Decor® Aqua Decorative Colorant is used under the product.

Care should be taken to perform sanding between coats to improve the final appearance, adhere to each other and get the desired performance from the paint.

The product is ready to use, no thinning is required.

It is very important to apply the product to the heads of the wood for good protection. Thus, water repellency will be given to the head parts that receive the most water.

Make sure that the edges of the wood are rounded. At sharp corners, the product does not hold fast enough and the film thickness remains weak. From this sharp corner, the wood may get water, causing the product to flake and spill.

In exterior applications, wooden details should be designed in such a way that water flows and does not accumulate on the surface. This significantly increases the service life of the product.

If it is desired to get maximum service life from exterior applications, at least 1 layer of the product should be applied to the back parts of the woods. In this way, the moisture that the wood can receive from the facade and construction will be kept to a minimum and the operation of the wood will be minimized.

To achieve a homogeneous appearance, sanding and painting should always be done in the direction of the veins of the wood.

The varnish application should always be started from the top of the wood and it should be applied in 3-5 square meters areas. If there will be a break in the application during the application; the application should be left at the joints of the wood or the end and façade edges. Otherwise, it will get on layer by layer and visually it will have bad results. It should always be brushed towards the area where the last varnish has not been applied, and then come back to the varnished surface and apply excess varnish.

The performance of wood increases with regular maintenance. To ensure optimum protection, check your exterior wood every two years and maintain it if necessary.

Dew may occur on the wooden or polished surface on days when the temperature difference is high during day and night. In this case, the surface should be wiped with a dry cloth, free of dew and moisture, and polish application should be started after the surface is completely dry.

Before the application on hardwoods such as iroko and chestnut containing natural additives such as tannin and rubber, the surface should be wiped with cellulosic thinner after sanding and cleaning of these rubber and tannin residues. These substances that can be found on the wooden surface prevent the paint from adhering to the surface and may cause late drying.

It is strictly not recommended to apply the product at noon when the sun hits steeply in the summer months. The product may dry on the surface without sufficient absorption by the wood. In addition, brush movement may be difficult due to quick-drying and brush marks may occur on the surface. To solve this problem, if the product is thinned more than necessary, the performance of the product decreases.

The painting should always be started from the top of the wood.

When it is desired to increase the film thickness on the surface or for maintenance purposes, it can be applied on Hickson Decor® Ultra Wood Stain and Hickson Decor® Ultra Aqua Wood Stain.

    Problems and Solutions

Exterior wood varnish doesn't spread and collect on the surface during application

    • Not enough sanding between coats.
    • Thinning the product more than necessary
    • Application of less product than the recommended amount to the surface
    • The presence of silicone or solvent vapors in the environment. For example; Using silicone products in the environment before and not having enough ventilation (PVC application, use of solvent-based paint, etc.)
    • Other substances contaminated the brush or gun used or not cleaned well before use.

    Solution:

    • The transactions under the title of the causes of the problem should be checked and the conditions causing this should be eliminated.
    • If the product has just been applied to the surface and it is a small area, the paint on the surface should be removed with a clean cloth and the surface should be completely cleaned from the new paint.
    • If it is not possible to clean the surface, more brushing should be done on the surface.
    • When there is an opening problem on the surface, the problem should be eliminated before allowing the product to dry on the surface.

Resin flowing from wood after application

    Causes of the Problem:

    • This situation is a natural process arising from the structure of the wood. Some types of wood, such as cedar, contain dense resin.

    Solution:

    • To improve the visuality, the parts where the resin flows can be wiped with cellulosic thinner and retouched after the smooth sandpaper.
    • If resin flow is observed on the surface after paint/varnish application; All the resin in the knots and resin pouches should be waited for a while to flow and dry on the surface. Afterward, the dried resin should be removed with a spatula and the resin residue on the surface should be wiped with cellulosic thinner.

If necessary, this area can be retouched after the sanding.

    • The best time to clean resin is when it is cold. When this application is made in hot weather, the resin can contaminate the surface.

Brush marks on the surface after application

    Causes of the Problem

    • The applied brush is not clean
    • Not using proper brushes
    • Failure to scan during the application (returning to the painted surface and feeding or removing excess paint)
    • Not applying enough product to spread the product on the surface.

    Solution:

    • To remove the brush marks, the application should be repeated after sanding.

The wood varnish does not dry out

    Causes of the Problem:

    • Over thinning of the product
    • Applying too much product
    • If the application is carried out under the conditions of the workshop, the ventilation (windows and doors are constantly closed, no airflow) is not sufficient

After the 1st coat application, the 2nd coat is applied without waiting for complete drying.

    • Failure to comply with the application temperature and relative humidity specified in the general instruction part of the product.
    • Humidity ratio of the wood is more than 20% during the application
    • Not wiping the wood with tannin such as Iroko and chestnut with cellulosic thinner before application.

    Solution:

    • Operations under the title of "Causes of the Problem" should be checked and the conditions causing this should be eliminated.

Peeling and spilling of the product from the surface

    Causes of the Problem:

    • Water intake from the heads of the wood or from the surface of the product that is not applied.
    • The moisture content of the treated wood during the application is more than 20%.
    • Failure to sand per the instructions for use.
    • If the product is not applied to the surface in a small amount and does not form a sufficient film layer due to the consumption rates specified in the instructions for use.
    • Since heat-treated wood (ThermoWood® etc.) has high absorption, the product should be applied at least 3 layers.

    Solution:

    • Operations under the title of "Causes of the Problem" should be checked and the conditions causing this should be eliminated.
    • Peeling and spilled areas should be cleaned and sanded completely, if the wood needs maintenance, the necessary maintenance should be done and the maintenance process should be completed by applying the product to these surfaces again.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the product alone on the exterior?

It can be used alone. However, its resistance to sunlight is greatly reduced. For this, wood colorants containing pigments that are resistant to sunlight should be used on the ground. Therefore, we recommend that the wooden surface be colored with Hickson Decor® Aqua Decorative Colorant.

How durable is a transparent product?

Maintenance time and the service life is quite short compared to colored products.

What is the gloss value of the product?

After the application, its shine on the wood is silky-matte.

Can I apply with a spray gun?

It is formulated to be applied with a brush. Since it does not have a viscosity to be sprayed with a gun, it is not suitable for application with a spray gun. If it will be applied with a paint gun, Hickson Decor Industrial series products should be preferred.

What is breathing paint and why is it important?

Breathable paints are products that form a paint layer on the painted surface that does not pass water but can pass water vapor. These can also be described as microporous paints with high water vapor permeability. A small crack that may occur on the surface as a result of the wood used in the external environment working due to precipitation and changes in humidity in the air, or getting a small impact, can cause the wood to become wet. The short drying of this water, which soaks the wood under the paint layer, is very important for the life of the paint and wood. The long-term wetness of the wood causes both paints to shed and the wood to rot. Breathing dyes prevent this condition. It also penetrates the wood well and has the flexibility to work with the wood.

How should it be applied with a brush?

You can dip the brush into the paint about one-third and apply it in the direction of the veins of the wood, leaving the necessary amount of product. So you get a homogeneous appearance.

What kind of brush should be preferred?

Quality brushes made of natural bristles with soft tips and with no loss of bristles should be preferred.

Can I apply it with a roller?

For the product to penetrate the wood thoroughly and prepare a homogeneous first coat, the first coat must be applied with a brush. Other coats can also be applied with a roller so that the film thickness is sufficient.

Can I thin it with water? How thin should I thin it?

It can be diluted by 10% with drinking water in very hot weather. Problems such as service life and quality can be encountered when excessive thinning is performed.
