    Tips

Hickson Decor Ultra Aqua Wood Stain Wood Varnish is ready to use, no thinning is required. It can be diluted up to 10% with drinking water for easy application in very hot weather.

Care should be taken to sand between coats to improve the final appearance, adhere to each other and get the desired performance from the paint.

For good protection, it is very important to apply Hickson Decor Ultra Aqua Wood Stain colored wood varnish on the heads of the wood. Thus, water repellency will be given to the head parts that receive the most water.

Make sure that the edges of the wood are rounded. In these sharp corners, the varnish does not adhere sufficiently and the film thickness remains weak. The possibility of getting water from this sharp corner arises, causing the varnish to peel off.

In exterior applications, the design of wooden details so that they do not accumulate on the surface where water will flow significantly increases the service life of the product.

If maximum service life is desired from exterior applications, at least 1 coat of product should be applied to the back of the wood. In this way, the moisture that the wood can take from the facade and construction will be kept to a minimum and the work of the wood will be minimized.

In order to achieve a homogeneous appearance, sanding and painting should always be done in the direction of the veins of the wood.

As the color of wood paints used in outdoor areas darkens, the resistance to sunlight (UV) and performance time increases. In the pre-sanding and Inter-fold sanding process, the sanding should be cleaned as it fills, and if it is not cleaned, it should be replaced with a new one.

The varnishing process should always be started from the top point of the wood and applied in areas of 3-5 square meters. If the application is to be interrupted during the application of wood varnish; the application should be left in the joints of the woods or the parts of the decking and facade edge. Otherwise, it will ride layer by layer and have visually bad results. Always brush towards the unpainted area where the last wood varnish was applied, then come back to the painted surface and rub in excess paint.

The performance of the wood increases with regular maintenance. Check your exterior wood every two years to provide Ideal protection and, if necessary, carry out wood varnish maintenance.

Dew can occur on wood or painted surface on days when the temperature difference is excessive day and night. In this case, the surface should be cleaned of dew and moisture by wiping with a dry cloth, and after the surface is completely dry and the painting process should begin.

Especially before the application of wood varnish to be made on hardwoods such as Iroko, Chestnut, tannin, and rubber-like natural additives, the surface should be cleaned from these rubber and tannin residues by wiping with cellulosic thinner after sanding. These substances, which can be found on the surface of wood, prevent wood varnish from sticking to the surface and can cause late drying.

Especially in summer, the application of the product at noon when the sun hits the steep is not recommended. Varnish can dry on the surface without adequate absorption by Wood. In addition, brush movement can be difficult due to rapid drying, and brush marks can occur on the surface. To solve this problem, the performance of the product decreases if the wood varnish is thinned too much.

Since heat-treated woods (ThermoWood® etc.) have high absorption, 1 coat of Hickson Decor Aqua Clear Primer transparent wood primer should be applied to the floor before applying the wood varnish.

    Problems and Solutions

Opening on the surface during application (not spreading and collecting in certain areas)

    Causes of the Problem:

    • Not enough sanding between coats.

Over thinning of Hickson Decor Ultra AquaWood Stain wood varnish

    • Apply less varnish than the recommended amount on the surface
    • The presence of silicone or solvent vapor in the environment. For example; The use of silicone products in the environment and not sufficient ventilation (PVC application, solvent-based paint use, etc.)

    * Contamination of other substances in the brush used or not cleaned well before use

    Solution:

    • The transactions under the title of the causes of the problem should be checked and the conditions causing this should be eliminated.
    • If Hickson Decor Ultra Aqua Wood Stain colored wood varnish has just been applied to the surface and a small area is, the paint on the surface should be removed with a clean cloth and the surface should be completely cleaned from the new paint.
    • If it is not possible to clean the surface, more brushing should be done on the surface.

    • When the product doesn't spread and collects in certain areas on the surface, the problem should be eliminated before allowing the product to dry on the surface.

The color of Hickson Decor Ultra Aqua Wood Stain wood varnish is different from the color you chose on the color chart.

    Causes of the Problem:

    • Application of Hickson Decor Ultra Aqua Wood Stain wood varnish without sufficient mixing.
    • Using more or less than the amount specified in the user manual
    • The woods on which you have applied wood varnish are impregnated with Tanalith or Tanatone.
    • Products appear in different shades in different wood types.

    Solution:

    • Since the specific gravity of the resin and the pigment that gives color to Hickson Decor Ultra Aqua Wood Stain wood varnish is different, the pigment sinks to the bottom in time. For this reason, it is necessary to mix the product very well with a spatula before using it and make sure that there is no undissolved pigment left in the bottom of the can.

    • During the application, the amount of product applied to the surface should be checked with a wet film meter from time to time and it should be ensured that the amount of product specified in the technical data form is applied.

    • If you want to see what the product will look like on the surface before wood varnish application, you can apply in a small area by requesting a product sample from our authorized dealers or us.

Resin flowing from wood after varnish application

    Causes of the Problem:

    • This situation is a natural process arising from the structure of the wood. Some types of wood, such as cedar, contain dense resin.

    Solution:

    • To improve the visuality, the parts where the resin flows can be wiped with cellulosic thinner and retouched after the patting sandpaper.
    • If resin flow is observed on the surface after the wood varnish application; It should wait for a while for all the resin in the knots and resin pouches to flow and dry on the surface. Afterward, the dried resin should be removed with a spatula and the resin residue on the surface should be wiped off with cellulosic thinner. If necessary, this area can be retouched after the sanding.
    • The best time to clean resin is when it is cold. When this application is made in hot weather, the resin can contaminate the surface.

Brush marks on the surface after application

    Causes of the Problem

    • The brush with wooden varnish applied is not clean.
    • Not using proper brushes
    • Failure to do combing during the application (coming back to the varnished surface and feeding or removing the excess wood varnish).
    • Not applying enough product to spread the wood varnish on the surface.

    Solution:

    • To remove the brush mark, the wood varnish application should be repeated after sanding.

Hickson Decor Ultra Aqua Wood Stain Wood Varnish does not dry

    Causes of the Problem:

Too much thinning of Hickson Decor Ultra Aqua Wood Stain Wood Varnish.

    Applying too much product.

If the application is made under the conditions of the workshop, the ventilation (windows and doors are constantly closed, no airflow) is not sufficient

Failure to comply with the application temperature and relative humidity in the general instructions section of Hickson Decor Ultra Aqua Wood Stain Wood Varnish

The moisture content of the wood during application is more than 20%.

Not wiping the tannin woods such as Iroko and chestnut with cellulosic thinner before application.

After the first coat is applied, the second coat is applied without drying

    Solution:

The transactions under the heading "Causes of the Problem" should be checked and the conditions causing this should be eliminated.

Peeling and spilling of Hickson Decor Ultra Aqua Wood Stain Wood Varnish

    Causes of the Problem:

    • Water intake from the heads of the wood or the surface of the wood without varnish
    • The moisture content of the varnish applied to wood during the application is more than 20%.
    • Failure to sand following the instructions for use
    • Due to the failure to comply with the consumption rates specified in the instructions for use, the varnish is applied in a small amount to the surface and does not form a sufficient film layer.

    Solution:

    • The operations under the title of the Causes of the Problem must be checked and the conditions causing it must be eliminated.
    • Peeling and spilled areas should be completely cleaned from the surface and sanded.
    • If the wood needs maintenance, the necessary maintenance should be done and the maintenance process should be completed by applying wood varnish to these surfaces again.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How is the glossiness of Hickson Decor Ultra Aqua Wood Stain Wood Varnish?

The gloss of the wood varnish on the wood after the application is silky-matte.

Can wood varnish be applied to another brand of paint?

Hickson Decor Ultra Aqua Wood Stain Wood Varnish should not be applied directly to previously painted surfaces. The old paint should be completely removed from the surface with sandpaper, and then the application should be made.

How should it be applied with a brush?

You can dip the brush into the wood varnish by one-third and apply it in the direction of the veins of the wood, leaving the necessary amount of product. So you get a homogeneous image.

    How to choose a brush?

Quality brushes made of soft-tipped natural bristles and that do not leave bristles should be preferred.

What is breathable paint and why is it important?

They are products that form a paint coat that is waterproof but can pass water vapor. They can also be defined as microporous paints with high water vapor permeability. A small crack that may occur on the surface as a result of the wood used working or being hit due to precipitation and the change of humidity in the air may cause the wood to become wet. The drying of this water, which soaks the wood under the paint layer, is very important for the life of the varnish and wood. If the wood is wet for a long time, it causes both the paint to fall off and the wood to rot. Breathable wood varnishes prevent this, but also penetrate the wood well and have the flexibility to work with wood.

Can I apply it with a roller? For Hickson Decor Ultra Aqua Wood Stain Wood Varnish to penetrate the wood well and prepare a homogeneous first coat, the first coat must be applied with a brush. Other coats can also be applied with a roller to provide sufficient film thickness.

Can I apply it with a spray gun?

It is formulated according to the brush application because it does not have the viscosity to be thrown with a gun, it is not suitable for application with a spray gun. Hickson Decor Industrial Series products should be preferred if applied with a spray gun.

What is the difference between Hickson Decor brush and industrial products?

There is no difference in service life. It consists of two separate products: industrial type color and lacquer. In this way, it reveals more of the natural appearance of the wood, while the brush type is self-colored varnish, giving a semi-transparent image. Also, industrial products can be applied with dipping, cloth, and gun.

How should I fill the cracks in the wood with Paste when maintenance?

In the maintenance work to be carried out, the old paint should be completely removed from the surface and the cracks and cracks in the wood should be repaired with a mixture of sawdust dust and product. Care should be taken to completely replace irreparably outdated, twisted, and cracked wood.

What is the difference between Solvent-based?

Water-based products are more natural and matte than solvent-based products. In addition, drying time is shorter and odorless than solvent-based products. Apart from this, there is no difference in service life and quality.

Can it be applied to another brand of paint?

Wood varnish should not be applied directly to painted surfaces. The old paint should be completely removed from the surface with sanding and then applied.

I applied it to the wood without sanding, would I have a problem?

What kind of problems do I have?

Before applying to the wood surface, sanding should be done for the product to stick and process into the wood in the best way. Application without sanding will cause peeling, flaking in the paint, not meeting its service life, and not getting full performance from the paint.

What if I don't sand between coats?

The new layer to be applied will not stick to the previous layer. As a result, the paint begins to peel off after a while. Also, you cannot get a homogeneous appearance on the surface.

Can I apply this product directly to the surface previously applied with Hickson Decor Ultra Wood Stain solvent-based Wood Varnish?

During the maintenance phase, you can apply water-based Hickson Decor products after sanding the surface previously applied with Hickson Decor Ultra Wood Stain.

Can I dilute it with water? How thin should I thin?

In very hot weather, it can be diluted 10% with drinking water. Problems such as service life, quality, and color tone may be encountered when thinning more than necessary.

  • What Does Wood Stain Do?

Wood Protective Stain is a liquid solution used as a protective layer that prevents the wood from moistening and abrasion and increases its durability against external factors.
The protective layer function is the most well-known feature of the wood stain. It is applied on wood as a preservative. It also makes long-used wooden surfaces and looks like new. The moisture of the wood is prevented with water repellent wood stains. It also protects the wood against UV rays.

    Wood Stain Types

Wood varnishes are divided into water-based varnish and solvent-based varnish.

Differences Between Water-Based Wood Stain and Solvent-Based Wood Stain

The service life of water-based and solvent-based wood stains is the same. Some differences are arising from the chemical structure of the raw materials used in its production.

    1. Water-based varnish is odorless and nature friendly. There is an odor of the thinner used in the production of solvent-based varnish.
    2. Water-based wood stain gives a natural look as wood absorbs more water-based stains.
    3. Water-based wood stain dries faster.
    4. Water-based wood stain is safer for health as it contains less VOC value.

How to Choose a Wood Stain?

Human and environmental health sensitive, environmentally friendly, heavy metal and lead-free, EN71-3  safety of toys certified should be preferred.

It is also important that the wood stain is a breathable stain that extends the life of the wood.
It is important to choose a wood stain that provides strong protection against sunlight in exterior wood.
If you want the wood to preserve its natural texture and appearance, you should use a translucent wood stain.

What is breathing wood stain/wood paint? And why is it important?

Breathable paints and stains are products that form a water-proof but water-vapor-permeable layer on the applied surface. A small crack that may occur on the surface due to cracking or a small impact of the wood used outdoors due to precipitation and changes in the humidity in the air may cause the wood to become wet. The drying of this water, which soaks the wood under the layer, is essential for the life of the paint and wood. If the wood is wet for a long time, it causes both the paint to fall off and the wood rot. Breathing stain/paint prevents this situation. At the same time, it penetrates the wood well and has the flexibility to work with wood.

    Wood Stain Colors and Prices
In the wood varnish application, if it is not desired to lose the natural texture of the wood, a semi-transparent varnish should be used. Tips for Wood Stain Application

When applying wood stains, sanding should be done between the layers to improve the final appearance and to ensure that the layers adhere to each other or to get the desired performance from the paint. For good wood protection, it is important to apply the product to the wood heads. In this way, water repellency is given to the heads of the wood that absorb the most water.

Make sure that the edges of the wood you will stain are rounded. In sharp corners, the wood stain does not adhere sufficiently, and the film thickness remains weak. The possibility of water intake from this sharp corner may appear and cause the wood stain to peel off.
In exterior wood stain applications, the design of the wooden details in such a way that the water does not accumulate on the surface significantly increases the product's service life.
