What is a relief in art?
A relief is a wall-mounted sculpture in which the three-dimensional elements are raised from a flat base.
As an answer to the question of what does relief means, we can say that relief is a word derived from French and means relief. However, relief is known as a type of relief art created by embossing and thinning structures of different sizes. In another definition, relief means placing historical buildings or human figures on the painting by giving dimensions with materials suitable for the model. The definition of three-dimensional shaping is also a suitable definition for relief. Relief art can be applied to almost any surface that is suitable for carving.
Relief art can be applied to materials such as stone, wood, paper, and aluminum. The most important point here is that the area to be applied is sanded very well, otherwise, good relief work cannot be obtained.
Relief art is used in many fields from architecture, jewelry, sculpture to technical drawing. This relief art is widely seen in hobby work, decoration in architecture, sculpture, decorative work. Relief materials differ depending on the area to be worked and the model. For example, for the relief application to be made on the marble surface, materials that can carve the marble are worked, while the materials required for paper relief work are very different. For example, relief dough, screwdriver, sandpaper, and pliers are generally used in making relief paintings. Wooden relief paintings are one of the most well-known relief works. Paper relief painting is also one of the most well-known relief works and is made in the form of gradual cutting of a poster after sizing. Ornamental flowers can be prepared from paper relief. Decorative items such as candlesticks made of aluminum material are also given wonderful images with the relief technique. In the architectural field, relief examples on the litter, door, and window sashes are common in the past.
Islamic relief is one of the most famous relief art types. There are many Islamic relief Works used in mosques.
Relief work is divided into three as rond-blank relief, low relief, and high relief in terms of relief technique. If relief work is carried out by collapsing the surface, it is called low relief, if it is carried out by raising the surface, it is called high relief. Low relief or low relief happens very close to the surface. The reliefs on the coins are among the best-known examples of low reliefs. High relief is much higher than the surface, the best example of high relief is sarcophagi. The third type, rond bos relief, is a relief type that is high enough to create a detached image from the surface. Sculptures are generally examples of these.
Relief pastes are materials that give three-dimensional features to relief works. However, relief pastes are used to add dimension to these works and color the reliefs. The reason why the relief technique is called a cake is that it looks like a cake cream. Relief paste is used in the food sector, industrial sector, agricultural fields, technical drawing, hobby works in daily life, and many other areas. It is a material produced to create an embossed texture, a three-dimensional texture on wood, metal, polyester, ceramic, glass surfaces.
